The total gross weight of goods transported as part of EU short sea shipping was estimated at almost 1.8 billion tonnes in 2021. Italy, the Netherlands and Spain accounted for almost 41 % of EU short sea shipping in 2021.

Italy was the major short sea shipping country in the EU in 2021, with 314 million tonnes, representing a share of 15.0 % of the total tonnages of EU short sea shipping in 2021. The Netherlands followed with 305 million tonnes and then Spain with 232 million tonnes of short shipped goods recorded in their main ports.

Among the EU Member States, 14 out of 22 registered a growth in short sea shipping between 2020 and 2021. The largest relative increase was recorded by Estonia (+15.1 %), followed by Poland (+11.9 %), Spain (+9.8 %), Italy (+9.7 %) and Germany (+9.2 %). In addition, the candidate countries Montenegro and Türkiye also recorded a positive trend between 2020 and 2021 (+14.8 % and +5.6 %, respectively). In contrast, the largest relative decreases in short sea shipping among the EU Member States were recorded by Malta (-43.2 %), Latvia (-11.8 %), Lithuania (-9.2 %), Cyprus (-6.2 %) and Finland (-6.0 %).
